The Power of a Fresh Perspective
The Power of a Fresh Perspective
Who needs perspective when you eat, sleep, and breathe your business, right? You know the ins and outs, can speak to its intricacies, and how it’s better than [fill in the blank] ad nauseam.
But perhaps that’s the problem.
The teams we work with are often neck-deep in the technicalities of their work. They know the product inside and out. Rightfully, they are proud of many of their accomplishments from their past initiatives and are quick to go into detail to catch us up to speed. And we love it! Our business is built on supporting and propelling passion.
But let’s take for instance a high-priority initiative like fundraising. Let’s be honest, fundraising is usually going to be priority #1. We often start there because it’s time-sensitive and business-critical (though there is absolutely value in harnessing momentum from it to take another look at your brand and company goals, but that’s a separate convo). There are countless best practice articles and pitch checklists out there. With a quick search online, you theoretically have all the information you need at your fingertips. But if it were only that easy…
Our clients often have trouble deciphering what’s immediately relevant to a potential investor and what would be too far into the weeds.
This tunnel vision from being too close can lead to missed opportunities with investors, quick write-offs as being too complex, or questions around what exactly is your story? Who are you? What will be your impact? It can also create blind spots on what to focus on next, even from an internal business strategy perspective. If you can’t see the forest for the trees, you don’t know how to align your team on where you’re headed next.
In our experience, they need an objective eye to ensure they emphasize the parts of the story that “click” in the mind of their audience and avoid parts that bog down and confuse. We’ve witnessed again and again the benefits an objective perspective can offer—from securing funding to codifying a succinct message framework.
An Objective Perspective is Invaluable
We’ve worked with many clients of various stages and industries. With that breadth comes a high-level understanding of what is generally compelling for a given audience. What inspires action and what requires further education. We understand that a lot of time and effort has gone into getting where you are today. Past work and experience are valuable, but our lack of emotional attachment to it means we can be objective when assessing it. So we can help simplify the way you talk, creating that all-important “click” or an “aha” moment for the listener. This approach allows you to go into the weeds when appropriate and avoid doing so when it’s not.
A fresh set of eyes can also help you identify and emphasize strengths that might have been overlooked. We can help visualize and highlight the impact. At the same time, we can help you tell an effective story about “weaknesses.” We can have candid conversations and ask the hard questions (and even some easy ones!) so that the output is stronger as a result. We provide you with a powerful “our weakness is actually a strength” response to any objection.
We also identify untapped strategic opportunities (and sometimes contacts) in the landscape, what we’ve seen other clients do, and what we believe the next best move is for you. We like to provide candid feedback—no sugar-coating. We want to let you know when things aren’t working (and why), and then give you actionable steps for achieving the real deal momentum—whether that’s securing funds, hosting a successful event, or launching a sales initiative.
How It Works
Our process involves a holistic assessment of where you are, what you’ve done in the past, the projects you’ve completed, the initiatives that have gained momentum, those that have lost momentum, and the ones that still have the potential to gain momentum in the future. We call this process a “Discovery Sprint.”
Then, we pull all of that context together and help you see, with a fresh, objective set of eyes, how to tell the story of your next initiative.
We then simplify your story not just for the investors you’re speaking to, but for yourself as well—whether it’s product positioning, investor storytelling, refining your sales pitch, or other aspects. We help you and your whole team focus on the most high-leverage goals and initiatives.
Case Study: A Tough Industry
Recently, we worked with a client in a sector full of regulation and historically underfunded by venture capital. This sector represents 20% of the global GDP in America but only receives 4% of VC investment, highlighting a huge opportunity… if the story is told correctly. Initially, we were drowning in complexity – the industry was a maze of acronyms, technical specifications, and interconnected relationships that would make anyone’s head spin without weeks of intensive study. Our clients were deep in the weeds, speaking a language that only industry veterans could understand.
This was their true strength – they knew the complex industry like the back of their hand, and that’s why they were the guys to tackle it. But it was also their storytelling weakness. They needed someone to come in with an objective eye and tell them what resonates, and what confuses. The key question became: Does an investor need to understand all this complexity to recognize the opportunity? Probably not.
In the pitch, we coached them to give just enough detail for their expertise to shine, but not too much that the audience gets glassy-eyed. We even found out that the co-founder was a customer before he came on the team. He could see the vision because he was intimately familiar with the problems they were solving—he knew firsthand it could quickly become the new “gold standard” for the entire industry. That’s a great opener.
VCs don’t want to sit there and be educated. They want to feel let in on a secret. With the new opening of the pitch, they feel like privileged insiders rather than bored or confused by a difficult industry.
Perspective is Our Speciality
Whether you choose to work with Creative Blue or not, we encourage you to seek an outside perspective when you feel stuck or unsure about your next steps. If you have multiple initiatives and need help prioritizing the next one to gain momentum, reaching out to an external expert can refine your vision and develop a powerful foundation for growth.
While internal ad-hoc teams or friendlies can offer support, they might be too close to your work or the industry to provide the unbiased perspective you need. An external team brings a more objective view of the investment landscape, allowing you to effectively communicate your story to fresh eyes. This can open up new opportunities and provide the momentum necessary for your next big initiative.
At Creative Blue, we specialize in helping you achieve your goals by providing the external perspective needed to refine your strategy and narrative. Whether you’re looking to gain investment, host a successful event, or launch a new sales initiative, our expertise can help you unlock new opportunities and accelerate your success.
Don’t waste another second overanalyzing past work and evaluating how to best move forward, let’s harness objectivity and unleash your full potential.
